His death was sudden and unexpected, but the cause has not been made public
Some very sad news reaches us today: house veteran Angel Moraes died suddenly yesterday, of unknown causes.
The news broke via a post on his Facebook page earlier today, which said in part:
“Angel passed away yesterday abruptly. He passed away surrounded with the people that loved him unconditionally.”
Moraes, who was born in 1965 and hailed from Brooklyn, rose to prominence on the international house scene in the mid-90s, thanks in large part to the output of his Hot N' Spycy label. Over the years, his productions spanned deep, soulful, tribal and progressive house, and he was often called upon for remixes by mainstream artists, including the likes of kd lang and the Pet Shop Boys. In 1998 he opened the world-famous Stereo club in Montreal, which is still open to this day, and more recently he had launched a range of well-received loudspeakers.
Wally Lopez, Murk's Oscar G, Defected boss Simon Dunmore and Darius Syrossian are among those who have been paying tribute on Twitter today.
As ever, our thoughts are with his family and friends.
