2 Bit Thugs

The all-female house collective come up with the goods yet again on this two-track release

They don't get half as many props as they deserve, but for this reviewer's money, Ariane Blank and Albena Flores' Shoes, Bags & Boys label seldom put a foot wrong. This latest release, their 52nd in some six years, merely confirms that opinion.

There are just the two tracks to choose from this time out, and compared to much of the label's output it's fair to say this two-tracker from ChixUnighted (AKA the two label bosses plus Stiva Carlberg) leans a little more than usual to the tech side. But it's the usual quality fare from SBB all the same.

Nonpopular is the techier of the two, and indeed is currently sitting in the minimal chart on Beatport. But with its barely-there male vocal snips and throbbing dubwise bassline it'd work just as well on deep house floors, particularly those where 'deep' and 'prog' are inclined to intermingle. Flip it over for Monlow, a slightly more uptempo affair with lightly tribal-tinged drums and a languid, lolloping feel overall.

If pushed, Nonpopular just nudges it for yours truly, but it's a close-run thing.
