Australian vocalist Jo Cooper fronts a haunting, floor-friendly number
A fine first release of 2018 for House Of 8 Records, coming from Australian vocalist Jo Cooper, which features two mixes and a dub.
First up is the Mr E Dub, which is very minimal and starts with the bassline and a percussion loop, then slowly brings in an acidic synth riff and a vocal pad. They've kept things stripped back to the bare bones here: there's the odd synth stab and drum fill, but apart from that the 'less is more' approach works a treat, creating a smouldering atmosphere. Next you have the Goddard Mix, which starts with a kick and a synth line that sounds quite trance-y. Then the vocal comes in, followed by the bassline, which is a distorted funky one that gives the track a more techy feel, though it's still high on atmospherics. The vocal really shines through and is accompanied by choppy percussion and a clap track. And then finally we come to the Mr E Remix, which features the full vocal from Jo Cooper, and I have to say it's a good one. It's soulful, yet restrained and not at all diva-esque, and really adds depth to the track. This is my favorite mix of the three, as it really brings everything into focus aurally.
If you like your music on a tech-house vibe but injected with a healthy dose of soul, this package really delivers: it's haunting and ethereal, but has chunky elements that make it a winner out on the floor.
