Germany's M.in serves up a minimal house gem on his own My Favourite Freaks label

After the success of his album Year Of The Ape, which I reviewed when it was released, and an EP on Green Velvet’s Cajual, M.in returns to his own label for a collaboration with vocalist D-Lee.

It starts with a cymbal crash and immediately brings in a kickdrum loop that is soon joined by a muted, plucked one-note guitar riff and a killer funky electro bassline. These instruments alone give it a real danceable feel, and are joined by D-Lee’s vocalising which like the rest of the track is kept minimal, with him just saying “yeah” repeatedly, though some other cut-up vocals are used as part of the musical backbeat. Then there's a massive riser and the vocal steps up and starts repeating “I’m hungry” while some more percussion is thrown into the mix.

Believe it or not, but that is all you need to make a highly infectious dancefloor destroyer! Like a lot of the best records, its simplicity is the key to its greatness and this is a great record that I look forward to playing out for months to come. It's not that polished or overprocessed and there aren't a great deal of effects used; it just simply works out on a dancefloor, which is where it counts.
