The New Power Generation is led by Morris Hayes, Prince's sideman for over 20 years
His Royal Purpleness Price Rogers Nelson may have left this mortal coil in 2016 but his music very much lives on, and now devotees have a chance to hear it live as Prince's former backing band the New Power Generation announce a short UK tour, to take place in December.
The NPG line-up has changed many times over the years, but rest assured this is no tribute act. Bandleader and keyboardist Morris Hayes worked with Prince for over 20 years, much of that time as his musical director, while the line-up also contains three other original NPG members: bassist Sonny Thompson, guitarist Tony Mosley and percussionist Damon Dickson. Lead guitarist Homer O'Dell and sax/flute man Kenni Holmen both also worked and toured with Prince while he was alive, while the line-up is completed by drummer Les Cleveland (protege of late NPG drummer John Blackwell) and brand new lead vocalist MacKenzie Green, a runner-up on America's Got Talent in 2019.
The shows will feature material from throughout Prince's career (ie, not just the New Power Generation years) and are described as "a non-stop musical kaleidoscope" that will make fans "dance, laugh, sing and cry" (though presumably not all at the same time).
