Out on Friday, the album also features cuts from Jey Kurmis, Funk D'Void and Hott Like Detroit
ONYVA's label ON IT Recordings are about to release their first label compilation on Thursday (2 February), and today iDJ is delighted to premiere one of four new, exclusive cuts featured on the album - namely Empire by rising Yorkshire star Franky Wah.
ON IT Recordings launched just last year, but thanks to releases from the likes of Mark Jenkyns, Jey Kurmis, Funkagenda, Mark Holmes, Hott Like Detroit and Brett Gould, has fast risen to the upper branches of the UK tech-house tree. And now the best of the label's output to date has been gathered together on the new Retrospective Collection, from the twitchy, post-minimal throb of Jey Kurmis's Demello to ONYVA's fairly self-explanatory Disco Got His Revenge, along with brand new tracks from MEMA, Mark Holmes & David Bradshaw, Hott Like Detroit and, of course, our man Franky himself.
A native of Yorkshire, Wah cites the likes of Patrick Topping, Miguel Campbell, Lee Foss and Sidney Charles as influences. He emerged on the scene last year with the House Party EP - a Beatport No 1 - and has recently taken up a DJ residency for Trouvé Grooves at Gorilla in Manchester, as well as running his own night Franky Wah And Friends. His contribution to the Retrospective Collection, as you'll hear below, is a chuggy tech-houser centring around a chunky b-line that Wah pairs with cut-up rap vocal fragments and assorted sirens and FX.
