Track comes from the 'Mugabe Out' EP, which is out this Friday
Our second great track premiere this week comes courtesy of London label Housekeeping Records, as iDJ brings you the first chance to hear Hov Areq by Jacobi. The track comes from his new EP Mugabe Out, which will be available this Friday (8 June).
Jacobi was one of the founding members of the Housekeeping collective, which also includes Taylor HK, Carl Waxberg and Sebastian MDH. The four came together in 2012 and have been going from strength to strength ever since: this summer, you can find them in residence at Hï Ibiza every Saturday (alongside Black Coffee), while next month sees them hosting their own room at fabric for Forms, alongside Pan-Pot.
The Mugabe Out EP finds Jacobi exploring various African and Middle Eastern sounds. As he puts it: "The EP was inspired by my deep love for African rhythm. The name of the EP came as I wrote the tracks, which was the week many of my Zimbabwean friends were celebrating the dictator Mugabe stepping down and the opportunity that lay ahead for the country."
Elsewhere on the EP, Mugabe Out itself is an energetic, percussive, tribal-leaning affair topped with chanted vox, while God Luck And Good Speed is a deeper, darker, techier affair. But the track that caught our ears the most was Hov Areq, a throbbing, bass-y tech-house groove that's more Cairo than Cape Town.
See what you think...
