We've got another great track premiere for you today, with the first chance to hear Not Obligated by US house and techno producer Jeff Henderson. Not Obligated is out as a single on JourneyDeep Records this Friday (16 November), backed by a remix from Noel Sanger.
With a musical background that stretches back to the mid-90s and ranges from hardcore punk to chill-out, Jeff Henderson was born in Chicago, spent much of his adult life in Denver but is currently based in Apollo Beach, Florida. As for Not Obligated itself, it's got one of the more intriguing origin stories we've heard for any track: it began life as a much-mutated sample of Henderson's nephew playing guitar, before he added in a sampled vocal featuring late theologian RC Sproul talking, because "next to music, one of my other hobbies is studying theology".
As unusual as its genesis may be, the end result is - as you can hear below - something of a revelation (see what we did there?), an engaging and constantly evolving slice of melodic techno, with just a hint of mystical Eastern sounds and that distinctive vocal. The EP's completed by a more driving, progressive-leaning mix from Noel Sanger, but it was the original that grabbed our ears the most. See what you think...
