Dark dubstep from San Francisco

2 Bit Thugs

Track comes from the 'Bish So Bad' EP, which is out on 9 Monday

We head into dubstep pastures for today's exclusive track premiere, as iDJ brings you a first chance to hear You Were Down by Bayalien Sound System. The track comes from the Bish So Bad EP, which is out on their own eponymous label on Monday (9 December).

Bayalien Sound System are Poppa Doses and Golden Eye, AKA Chris Cohan and Ivan Lindau, who as the name suggests are based in the Bay Area of California. They describe their output as "psychedelic bass music" – which they make, apparently, in Golden Eye's "clandestine, off-grid, solar-powered laboratory".

Elsewhere on the Bish So Bad EP you'll find the menacing, trappy, doomed-out title track and Work, which comes on like a wobble-basslined homage to dubstep's early days. But the track we're feeling the most is You Were Down, which opens with a full minute of otherworldly chimes, echoes and FX before dropping some heavyweight bass pressure that comes topped with cut-up R&B vox.

See what you think…
