Four fierce n' firing cuts that'll turn the dark up nicely

Here we have a four-tracker from Stimpy, a Russian D&B producer who hasn't featured on these pages before, but whose production career dates back to the mid-2010s with releases on Fokuz, Soul Deep Digital, Warm Recordings and Celsius Recordings, among others.

Here, though, he's doing the do for Fokuz sub-label Citrus Recordings. Opener Ill Founded is a dark, moody stepper centred around scorching, surging bass and an indecipherable Rastaman vocal snip, while Crispy itself veers a little closer to the neurofunk that is Citrus's stock-in-trade with its reversed-sounding synths and general dense, brooding, claustrophic mood. Next comes Rudebwoy's New Era, which is similar in style to Ill Founded, before the EP's completed by Rubadub, another dark, intense affair.

If you're looking for something that packs plenty of energy and menace, but without feeling the need to get all aggy and shrill or sounding like its built for 14-year-olds who've overdone the Red Bull, this is one to check for sure, with Ill Founded taking the gold for yours truly.
