Germany's The Checkup comes to Kerri Chandler's label with a fine three-tracker

Berlin's Raphael Pujol, better known to house lovers as The Checkup, comes to Kerri Chandler's Madhouse Records with a three-tracker that hints at a love of classic New Jersey sounds.

A Rhodes gets the ball rolling, a smooth n' sumptuous, jazz-tinged groover that features two vocals: one a slightly chipmunk'd and indecipherable sung snippet, the other – unless I'm very much mistaken – an interview with Patrice Rushen in which she eulogises the eponymous instrument, which unsurprisingly features quite prominently in the track itself, too.

A Rhodes has been well chosen as an opener, because to these ears it's the clear standout, but the EP's other two tracks aren't too shoddy either! I Got To, with its spoken male vocal, tinkling vibes, choppy piano chords/stabs and shuffllin' beats, also has something of a Jersey-ish air to it, albeit heard through a 21st Century deep house prism. The EP's then completed by I'm Burning, another deep garage groove with more o' dat fine Rhodes action.

Very classy stuff indeed… but then from Madhouse we expect no less!
