Iner launches his new label with a pleasingly varied house six-tracker
What we have here is the first ever release from DOBRO, a new label based in Belarus and headed up by Vadim "Iner" Lupin (Flat White, Lisztomania). And if the six tracks featured here are anything to go by, that's a label deep house lovers are gonna want to keep an eye out for…
The EP opens with That Night from Buzz Compass, an uptempo cut that pays homage to classic disco – there's a definite hint of Dr Love to the bassline, while the vocal sounds suspiciously like a snip from Weekend. Iner's own Respectful follows, opening with what sounds a bit like the Strings Of Life piano line played on a Spanish guitar before breaking out into a lounge-y little hipshaker with strong samba-esque overtones and a very sweet-sounding, near-chipmunk'd female vocal.
Next up, Scruscru's Surfin' On Hokusai's Waves and Sune's Flutes take us into jazz-house territory, the former having something of a "jazz-dance at Dingwalls" feel while Flutes plumps for a mellower vibe and vaguely recalls 70s/80s US TV soundtracks (think Taxi, Hill Street Blues). Tilman's Sweet Dreamer is more of a standard-issue disco-house roller but still plenty playable/danceable, and then finally there's Yann Polewka with Grezy, an uptempo soulful/disco house cut with some fine violins and Loleatta vocal snips.
Taking in an impressive range of styles across its six tracks, this EP is a superb opening salvo from DOBRO – let's hope there's plenty more like it where this one came from.
