Tracks on this first of two EPs come from Olivian DJ, Silvio Carrano, Block & Crown and Skinnybit
It's that time again when the dance music industry’s great and not so great decamp to warmer shores for the Miami Winter Music Conference. This EP is the first of two from Zulu Records showcasing the calibre of their releases for 2018, and I have to say it's dynamite.
There are four tracks, of which the first is Skinnybit's No Swag, a bold and brash hip-houser with a chopped-up female rap vocal as the main hook, backed by a grunting electro bassline, shuffling drums, ethnic percussion and snare rolls to increase the tension. It's a real funk nugget and a fine way to open this sampler. Then you have Block & Crown with House Fever [Tastemaker Remix], another funky affair with a wobbly bassline, female vocals, an old-school stabbed electro piano riff and crisp percussion with defined claps. The third track is Silvio Carrano's I Wanna, which starts with a percussive intro, then drops a very recognisable male vocal sample with risers a-plenty which give it a very futuristic feel. Finally you have Olivian DJ with Do You Know, which has a quirky looped bassline, a female vocal sample and a slightly frenetic feel that never gets too monotonous thanks to all the backing sounds and FX.
My favourite track is the last one, but it's a closely fought contest as all four are strong contenders. The Zulu Records posse have done themselves proud with this release.
