Playlister.FM's Dan Lywood and Ben Bridgewater serve up Balearic and downtempo vibes on this second Beach Rouge mix album
house and deep disco," is how the hype sheet describes this second
collection of chilled tuneage from Beach Rouge, a beach bar at the
LUX* Belle Mare resort in Mauritius.
is, of course, no shortage of exotic beach bars and swanky hotels
offering up their own compilations these days - and there will
undoubtedly be some who baulk at such blatant 'brandification' of
dance/electronic music. It's a viewpoint we can certainly understand, but
assessed purely on its sonic merits, Beach Rouge Vol 2 is a pretty
decent album all the same. And with the likes of Shanti Celeste,
Alexander Nut and NTS Radio's Femi Adeyemi all booked to play this
season, the team at Beach Rouge do at least actually seem to have half a clue about the music!
and mixed by Dan Lywood and Ben Bridgewater, the team behind music
curation specialists Playlister.FM, the mix opens with the supremely
chilled Mayflies by Greg Sawyer, moving on to take in tracks and
mixes from the likes of Eli & Fur, Hot Toddy, Ray Saul and Neil
Quigley. The emphasis is, as you'd expect, on sunlounger-friendly
laidback grooves; things do get a bit more 'up' in the middle but
it's not long before we're back in Balearic, headnoddin' territory as
the mix draws to a close.
Given the sheer number of similar comps around, it'd
be hard to argue that Beach Rouge Vol 2 was an essential purchase.
But if you're in the market for a downtempo mix CD right now, this one is
definitely worth checking.
