Features tracks and mixes by Mic Newman, Simon Baker, Move D, Rick Wade and more
Established in 2011 as an offshoot of 2020Vision, these days FINA Records is an entirely autonomous concern run by Simon Morell. The label recently celebrated its fifth birthday, which is marked by the release of this collection of some of FINA's best bits to date. And what a (reverse) birthday present it is!
From Roberto Rodriguez's garage-y opener Thinking Of You, with its shimmering synth-bass and plainitive female vocal, to Guy Andrews' epic, prog-tinged closer Divide, what we have here is a snapshot of contemporary house music at its finest. Between those two bookends you'll find wonky, jazz-tinged jams like Leif's So Long (as remixed by Move D), dreamy late-night deepness such as Powel's Cloud City, haunting Rhodes workouts (Esa & Mervin Granger's Verloore), squelchy leftfield funk (Morning Factor's Sultans Of Swing) and more.
There's enough of a range of styles that it doesn't get boring, yet the collection gels nicely together as a whole since what all the tracks have in common is a refusal to pander to lowest common denominator instant gratification and a determination to give the listener a more rewarding listening experience. If you like your house from the deeper side and aren't too blinkered to accept a few changes of pace and tone along the way, you'll love this.
