This week: Wild Life, DJ EZ, Flying Lotus, Daft Punk, Bloc, Maceo Plex, Robert Hood and a YouTube video about YouTube videos
1. The
line-up has been announced for Wild Life, the Brighton festival run
by Disclosure and Rudimental. Ice Cube, Skepta, Carl Cox, Bastille,
DJ EZ, Andy C, Four Tet, David Rodigan, Martinez Brothers, De La
Soul, Dixon and many more will play on 11-12 June.
2. The
new sound of Berlin is... grime? Well, maybe not quite, but Skepta
and Boy Better Know have been booked to play Berghain on 15 April.
Yes, it is a bit odd.
3. Expect
to see a new album from Flying Lotus before 2016 is out. In a Beats1
interview, the LA beatsmith told Zane Lowe that he expects this year
to be his “most prolific” yet.
5. In
Ibiza news, Maceo Plex will be taking over Tuesdays at Pacha with his
new night Mosaic this season. Defected, meanwhile, have announced
there'll be no Defected In The House this year – they're focusing
their energies on Glitterbox (Space, Fridays).
6. Big
iDJ respect to our old friend DJ EZ, who'll be playing a 24-hour DJ
set on 27-28 February in aid of Cancer Research UK. The set will be
live-streamed on EZ's own website, with anyone tuning in urged to
make a donation.
7. Remember
the Techno Viking from that YouTube video? The whole viral phenomenon
is now the subject of a 48-minute documentary by film-maker Matthias
Fritsch, who shot the original clip. Find The Story Of Techno Viking
on YouTube.
8. A
start-up in San Diego called Nervana has invented some headphones
that don't just play music. They also send electrical pulses into the
brain that apparently stimulate the production of the feel-good
hormones serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin.
9. Robert
Hood has recorded a new album under his Floorplan alter-ego. Entitled
Victorious, it's been co-produced by Hood's daughter Lyric and will
be out in June.
11. Like
Detroit techno? Like photos? Like... books? Then you'll just love
313ONELOVE, a new book about Detroit techno by Berlin photographer
Marie Staggart. It's out on 31 March.
12. Daft
Punk documentary Daft Punk Unchained, directed by Hervé Martin
Delpierre, will be broadcast on BBC next Friday (19 February) at
10pm. Set those Tivo boxes now!
