Weekend Primer #49

Smoking terrace conversation-starters for your NYE/NYE adventures

2016 Dec 30
2 Bit Thugs

This week: Solomun, Dixon, Tresor, Detroit, BPM Festival, FACT, free party bust, Elrow, Marco Carola and more

1. Solomun [pictured] and Dixon have announced a special New Year's Eve back-to-back set. It will all be happening at Space Ibiza NY, which - just so's we're clear - is in New York, not Ibiza, and support will come from Vanjee & Nadav Dee and Frank & Tony. Meanwhile, Solomun also posted a free-to-download Xmas mix this week - and here it is...

2. The owners of Berlin's legendary Tresor and US real estate developer Fernando Paluezo have begun work renovating the former Packard Plant in Detroit. Palazuelo bought the site in 2013 and has joined forces with Tresor's Dimitri Hegemann to develop a brand new nightclub as part of its $350m renovation, which will also include a spa, a hotel, artists' studios and retail and office units. The club is expected to open in 2018.

3. Amsterdam is getting a brand new festival in 2017. The one-day event Music On is the bigger, brasher, outdoor version of Marco Carola's Ibiza party of the same name, and takes place in the city's Meerpark on Saturday 6 May. Artists already confirmed include Carola himself (of course), plus Stacey Pullen, Loco Dice, Apollonia, Martinez Brothers and more.

4. Barcelona-based party promoters Elrow have issued an apology after posters for their upcoming Bollywood-themed party at The Warehouse Project, Manchester sparked a number of complaints. It seems some people weren't too happy with a cartoon version of the Hindu god Shiva being used to promote the event.

5. Meanwhile fellow Barcelona party-starters FACT have announced a series of Jan/Feb events in Mexico, Paris, Barcelona and Brazil. Dennis Ferrer, Steve Bug, Ryan Crosson and DJ T are among their guests at Mexico's Playa Del Carmen on 6 January (as part of the BPM festival), Fur Coat headlines the Paris bash on 7 January, Ilario Alicante guests at Pacha Barcelona on 15 January and John Digweed and Lee Burridge join the FACT team at Brazil's Warung beach club on 2 February.

6. Tis the season of goodwill to all men. Unless of course you're Devon Constabulary, in which case tis the season to break up a 1,000-strong unlicensed rave in Bellever Forest on Dartmoor. Still, no arrests were made and no equipment was confiscated, which is something...

7. It's a bit early to think about now, admittedly, but once the NYE dust has settled, there are some cool nights coming up at Egg LDN in the New Year, which should help banish those late-winter blues! 27 January sees Leftwing & Kody dropping in, while Sonny Fodera's world tour in support of his recent Defected long-player Frequently Flying comes to town on 17 February.

8. EDM duo The Chainsmokers have set a new US chart record, with their single Closer topping the Billboard Dance/Mix Show airplay chart for 17 weeks. The record was previously held by Swedish House Mafia, whose Don't You Worry Child held the top spot for 16 weeks. Meanwhile on the main Billboard Dance/Electronic singles chart, Closer has been No 1 for 17 weeks.
