UK producer Gareth Hester serves up the dark, techy vibes
If you like your D&B deep, dark, techy and minimalist, this two-tracker from UK producer Covert Garden (AKA Gareth Hester) should be right up your proverbial dark alley.
Knuckles is up first, opening with a hi-hat and sci-fi keyboard sounds before introducing an understated steppers' beat. So far, so liquid, but as the track evolves darker, more industrial sounds come to the fore, including a reverberating metallic synth, rave stabs and assorted FX, alongside a hefty dose of wobble bass. It all adds up to a red-eyed headnodder's delight, that's nonetheless still got enough energy for the dancefloor. Flip it for the slightly lighter-in-feel Cerebro, which opens with more tizzy hi-hats and atmospherics galore before a SAW-like spoken male vocal sample at around the 1:20 mark ushers in another sparse steppers' beat and some serious bass pressure.
A fine way to get iDJ's year in drum & bass started.
