Chicago legend DJ Sneak and Russian veteran Tripmastaz come to Cassy's Kwench Records
House pioneer DJ Sneak and Russia's Tripmastaz have been co-producing since their first joint release in 2014, and this three-tracker for Cassy’s Kwench Records adds to their ever-growing body of work together.
First up is UFO, which is based around a sampled male spoken vocal about extraterrestrials. It starts with a bizarre sitar-and-hippy-chanting intro, then changes completely when the beats kick in - which they do in fine old school style, with a percussion pattern that's joined first by the vocal and then by some damn fine 303 that grunts and burbles with gusto throughout the rest of the track. There are other sounds in play, too, but the main hook is that acid line.
Next is Click Thang, which is very minimal throughout with a solid kick, a simple synth riff and a distorted, vocodered male vocal speaking about the track being “so hot” in a slowed-down hip-house style. Finally you have Last Daze Of Dizko, which starts with a kick and a tizzy hi-hat and then introduces a frenetic funky loop which is added to with a clap and filters. The track is retro in flavour and sounds great for it.
Three very different-sounding tracks, then, but all tied together by an old school theme, and I have to say they all work brilliantly. My favourite is UFO but the quality standard is high throughout.
