2 Bit Thugs

The second part of a two-part EP from Chicago producer Ed Nine on Chez Damier's label

Four very fine deep house groovers make up this second part of a two-part release from Inner Balance, sub-label to Chez Damier's Balance, which is the work of Chicago producer Ed Nine.

Alert is up first, and pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the EP: like the other three tracks it's an all-instrumental deep house jam, characterised in this case by some retro synth chords that recall Italian house of the early 90s, and a rinky-tink xylophone (or possibly vibes?) line. Persevere is in a similar vein but with a less busy sound palette, making this one for those blissed-out 4am 'locked in a groove' moments. The blissed-out feel continues on Journey On Archer Avenue, which to these ears doesn't sound a million miles from the spacey, deep garage sound of Strobe Records back in the day, and there's something of a Jersey-esque air, too, to closer Creeper with its luxuriant piano chords.

As stated at the start, though, all four cuts plough a fairly similar furrow, and any or all of them will please lovers of trad-style deep house and garage no end.
