The EP is the first release from the recently relaunched Cooltempo label
After two EPs trailing her debut album Life Of Leaf, which will be released soon, Francesca Lombardo turns her attention towards something more dancefloor-friendly for Eye Ring, for which she delivers a great remix package that features some of house and techno’s finest: Martin Buttrich, Guti and Francesco Tristano, alongside a rework of her own.
The Francesca Lombardo Remix is in fact the opener, and starts with a mid-paced rolling drum pattern, joined by a plucked string melody, a hi-hat and, eventually, lush orchestral strings that come in slowly, along with a plucked violin which sounds melodious and very 'different' (in a good way). Next comes Martin Buttrich's Dub Thing Two, which has an almost breakbeat backing and more electro-fied instrumentation, but again is a solid midtempo groover. Then there's Guti & Francesco Tristano's Another Paradise Remix, which has acidic leanings but - in keeping with the whole package - is avant garde to say the least. Martin Buttrich's Dub Thing One has a solid kick, claps and a rolling synth line and is quite minimal, and then to finish we have the Another Paradise Postlatin Remix from Guti & Francesco Tristano, which pumps it up and features odd vocal snippets over a pumping bass-synth backdrop.
My favourites here are the first and last tracks, but the EP overall is deep, thought-provoking and, if you're after something a little different from the norm, well worth a listen.
