Harrogate-based producer John Hebdon comes to the Russian label
Now here's a record that jumped right out at yours truly from amid the sea of perfectly playable but really quite samey tech-house releases in this week's inbox…
Hebdonis hails from Harrogate, in North Yorkshire. Known as John Hebden in real life, he's been producing under the name Hebdonis since 2017, but his involvement with house music goes back much further (he's been DJing since 1999)… and it shows, with both cuts featured here demonstrating a solid understanding of what will and won't move a dancefloor.
On the A, Haus Musick is a sparse and minimal-influenced affair, with a cheeky little off-kilter bassline, oddball synth sounds and a looped, spoken "haus musick!" vocal that's counterpointed by a jazzy female snip. On the B, You Know What's Up rides a lolloping rhythm with lashings of warm bass and a computerised "you know what's up?" vocal that vaguely recalls both Fatboy Slim's Star 69 and MTF ft. Lidell Townsell's classic Get With U.
So: two very serviceable house cuts that should work on a range of floors thanks to their distinctive blend of different influences, from US garage to minimal techno – and that don't, as a result, sound like much anything else out there. What's not to like?
