With his debut single out now on Skint Records, this Nottingham producer does us a mix and shares some thoughts on tacos, tequila and tattoos
Our Making Waves showcases DJ mixes by rising stars of the scene. Today it's the turn of Nottingham-based synthesizer, tacos and football obsessive Modri, whose debut single is out now on Skint, complete with a vocal from Crazy P's Danielle Moore
AKA: Formerly of one-half of synth duo April Towers
Location: Nottingham, UK
Describe the music you make in 20 words or less: Melodic house music with a dash of 80s that gets you dancing while pulling your heartstrings.
Five key influences: New Order, Madonna, Radiohead, Underworld, DJ Shadow
What one artist/producer would you most like to work with, and why? I would love to write a tune with James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem. The synth melodies in their tracks are so well-constructed and Murphy always delivers mind-blowing vocal lines to complement them. I've always really liked the idea of layering my beats with acoustic drums, too, which is something they do brilliantly. Who knows, maybe one day I'll stumble into him on a night out and pitch the idea!
If people check out just ONE of your tracks, what should it be? My debut single It Takes Time feat Danielle Moore, which has just dropped on Skint Records. Lyrically the track just feels very relevant right now, with the central theme of hope and separation. There's a cool dub mix of the track in the pipeline too, which I'm really excited about!
Tell us about the mix: I've gone pure rave vibes on this mix. The sun was beaming into my studio when I started curating the tracklist and it just made me want to party hard! There's a a really nice diverse mix of labels here too, all doing really great things.
What else do iDJ readers need to know? I've got 'It's coming home' tattooed on my hip after I got smashed in Portugal at the 2018 World Cup. People often ask me if I regret it and the answer is absolutely not! It's actually my favourite tattoo. Life is about stories and I think we spend far too much time worrying what people think. I'm also obsessed with tacos. I reckon I have them at least once a week. Chuck in a few shots of honey tequila and you've got yourself a party!
