Croatian techno hero Petar Dundov drops a two-tracker for veteran Belgian label Music Man Records
Croatia’s esteemed DJ/producer Petar Dundov makes a welcome return to Belgium’s iconic Music Man Records with a brand new EP.
This truly original-sounding melodic techno two-tracker kicks off with Dalmatina, which starts with an ethereal sound, a punchy electro bassline and some light, airy synth work. It then continues the flow for just under nine minutes, but never loses your interest as the production is tight and the whole ethos is very musical. There are wobbly synth leads, retro 80s drum sounds, and a warmth and clarity to the whole track that just keeps layering on intricate sounds and builds into a thing of aural beauty.
The second track, Once We Were Here, takes things a step further and is over 13 minutes long. It opens with tribal drums and an arpeggiated synth riff, which are joined by a wood block and other percussive elements. Then a haunting lead line weaves its way to the front of the soundscape, while other sounds come and go in a mini-masterpiece that has a chilling, soporific effect. In a good way, that is - it's in no way boring! Instead it's just very calming and flows around your senses.
This EP has a lot going for it, and proof of its quality lies in the fact that although both tracks are really long, they never feel laboured. Both are equally well-crafted compositions, so I'm not picking a favourite.
