Two Northern Irish prog stalwarts team up, with a little help from vocalist Summer Moreland
Today’s exclusive track premiere comes to you once more courtesy of our good friends at Pangea Recordings over in the US, as iDJ brings you a first chance to hear the Last 2 Standing remix of Hold Your Breath by GSEP & Rikki Sawyer feat Summer Moreland. It's one of four mixes that make up the Hold Your Breath EP, which is out on Friday.
GSEP is John Martin, a Belfast lad who grew up listening to the likes of Sasha, Digweed, BT and Nick Warren, and who got his big break at Lush (AKA Kelly's) in Portrush in the mid-00s. Since then he's been a mainstay of the prog scene in Ireland and has chalked up releases on labels including Pangea, Whose House and Perfecto Black. Rikki Sawyer, meanwhile, is another native of Northern Ireland whose production CV reaches back nearly a decade now, with releases on labels including Perfecto Black, Balkan Connection, Family Grooves and ASTIR Recordings.
The two have worked together before – Martin remixed Sawyer's Take Me Home for ASTIR back in February – but this particular track was the result of a collaboration born out of enforced isolation of the coronavirus lockdowns.
“The fact is that the world turned to music this year to keep their hopes up and their dreams alive,” say Pangea. “Many demos along this line came our way, but we were really impressed when we received Hold Your Breath from Rikki Sawyer and John Martin (GSEP), along with an infectious vocal with a message from Summer Moreland. These artists had a quality message for humanity, so we decided to sign and package it to you so you could hear it yourself.”
Elsewhere on the EP, the Extended Mix of Hold Your Breath and the accompanying Spotify Edit operate in moody prog-breaks territory, while the Whoriskey Remix is a darker rub that nudges towards techno. But the mix we've got for you today comes from UK duo Last 2 Standing, who bring us a remix that comes on like Renaissance-style early 90s prog given a late 90s ’Beefa twist.
